King Crimson The Great Deceiver Live 1973-74

『Frame By Frame（紅伝説）』のリリース翌年の1992年、キング・クリムゾンは『The Great Deceiver』というボックスセットをリリース。1973年から74年までに限定しつつ未発表音源4枚組というヴォリュームは、当時も今も革新的だ。

このときのラインナップは、ロバート・フリップ、ビル・ブラッフォード、ジョン・ウェットン、デヴィッド・クロス。時期的には『Larks’ Tongues In Aspic』『Starless And Bible Black』リリース前後のツアーなのだが、『Red』に収録されている曲も既に演奏されている。

フリップ&イーノの『No Pussyfutting』のイントロを経て『Larks’ Tongues In Aspic Part 2』ではじまるオープニングから既に圧巻。収録曲は1973年体制以降が大半だが、ウェットンが歌う『20th Century Schizoid Man』は結構新鮮だ。各メンバーの演奏は、決して共存ではないが、といってぶつかり合っているわけでもない。結果生み出された世界観は、プログレッシヴ・ロックの極点に達しているのではないだろうか。

字数の豊富なブックレットは、読み手を疲弊させる。が、音源を聴いただけではわからないバンドの状況を、補完してあまりある情報だ。このボックスに先駆けてリリースされた（当時の）キャリア横断ボックスセット『Frame By Frame（紅伝説）』についてのメディア評も掲載されていて、フリップの中ではこの2つのボックスは姉妹作の位置付けなのかもしれない。
